What if you could tune into the hidden melody of the universe as you fall asleep? This video blends soft, ethereal sounds inspired by the vastness of space, creating a peaceful backdrop for your night.
Inspired by a recent exploration of concept sounds, I set out to capture something as visually stunning as the Milky Way and see if it could be equally captivating to the ear. With the help of ChatGPT, I asked, "If the Milky Way had a noise, what would it sound like?"
Here's what it imagined:
A low, undulating bass, like the distant heartbeat of a black hole or the galaxy’s center, slowly reverberating across space, offering a grounding, mysterious presence.
A vast, low-frequency drone, symbolizing the dark matter and gravitational pull that bind the galaxy together—a steady, omnipresent hum, like the deep vibration of the cosmos itself.
Intermittent bursts of soft pulses, mimicking the quiet explosions of supernovae or the ripples of gravitational waves, adding subtle vibrancy to the soundscape.
Slow, rolling waveforms, building and receding like the flow of cosmic energy from the galaxy’s core, creating a dynamic, continuous pulse.
So, back in my lab, I set out to replicate these cosmic sounds using my usual techniques of elongation and filtering hand-recorded audio. With a mix of MIDI keyboard, the tinkling of ice (optimistically trying to capture the crack of cosmic ice dust), and other raw sounds, I crafted the soundscape you’re about to hear.
I'm really proud of how it turned out! My ultimate test? How well my children sleep to it. After playing it for my youngest, who slept 11 hours straight without waking, I'm happy to report—it works!
So, close your eyes, relax, and let the calming rhythms of the cosmos guide you into deep rest.
