Singapore, A Small, Heavily Urbanised, Island City-state, Situated In Southeast Asia, Off The Southern Tip Of The Malay Peninsula, North Of Indonesia. Singapore Comprises Of One Main Island And Over 60 Smaller Islets, Covering A Total Surface Area Of Roughly 730 Square Kilometres. The Mainland Of Singapore Measures 50 Kilometres From East To West, And 27 Kilometres From North To South, With 193 Kilometres Of Coastline. Humans Settled The Islands That Now Form Singapore At Least As Early As The 2nd Century A D, But Little Is Known About The Early History Of The Area. The Name Singapore Originates From The Malay Word "Singapura", Which In Turn Was Derived From Sanskrit, And Translates To "Lion City."

Singapore Lies Along The Southeastern End Of The Strait Of Malacca, A Vital International Shipping Route Connecting The Indian Ocean To The Pacific. With A Population Of Roughly 6 Million In Such A Small Area, Singapore Is One Of The Most Densely Populated Countries On Earth .
