After campaigning in support of Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election, tech billionaire Elon Musk has emerged as a powerful force in Trump’s second administration. The world’s richest man has shaken up the Washington establishment as head of the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency, drastically cutting spending, dismissing officials and workers across the federal government, and gutting USAID – arguably one of the country’s most significant soft-power tools. But Musk’s outsize influence is being felt far outside the US, courting controversy by attacking the leaders of traditional American allies like the UK and Germany while endorsing right-wing parties like the AfD. Even as he continues to reshape the US federal government in line with President Trump’s ambitions, there is growing unease – and pushback - against what many see as his unwanted interference in the politics of other countries.
