The Highland copperhead (Austrelaps ramsayi) is one of the most venomous snakes in Australia. Bites are a serious medical emergency. However, this species is not very dangerous to people. The Highland copperhead is quite secretive and usually not very defensive. Unlike the Eastern brown snake or the Tiger snake it does not cause many bites. It inhabits colder regions of New South Wales and few areas in Victoria. Highland copperheads are elapids. It is interesting to see how confusing it can be to use only common names.
