In Mosul, Iraq, a mobile library is roaming the streets, aiming to inspire young people to read and gain knowledge after most of its libraries were destroyed during the war against the Islamic State in 2014.
The Iraqi city was devastated by the Islamic State’s occupation from 2014 to 2017, which resulted in the destruction of countless homes, public buildings, and institutions—including its libraries.
While Mosul University has reopened its central library, once the largest in the city, it now operates on a significantly smaller scale. To help rebuild a culture of reading, the mobile library travels to various communities and neighborhoods, offering its services entirely free to the public.
